Cardinal Edward Bede Clancy was born on December 3, 1923, in Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia. He was ordained a priest on July 23, 1949. On January 19, 1974, he was ordained titular bishop of Ard Carna and auxiliary bishop of Sydney. From 1978 until 1983, he served as archbishop of Canberra. On February 12, 1983, he became archbishop of Sydney, and resigned on March 26, 2001. He was created a cardinal on June 28, 1988. His titular church is Holy Mary of Vallicella. He is Archbishop emeritus of Sydney.
