Cardinal Fernandes de Serafim Ara˙jo was born in Minas Novas, Brazil, on August 13, 1924,and ordained to the priesthood on March 12, 1949. At the provincial seminary of Diamantina, he taught canon law. On January 19, 1959, he became titular bishop of Verinopolis and auxiliary bishop of Belo Horizonte, until he was assigned coadjutor bishop of the same in 1982. He was then appointed archbishop on Feb 5, 1986. On February 21, 1998, he was created a cardinal, his titular church being St. Louis Marie Gringion de Monfort. In the Roman Curia he serves in the Congregation for the Bishops, the Commission for Latin America, and the Council for Justice and Peace. On January 30, 2004, the Holy Father accepted his resignation as Archbishop of Belo Horizonte due to age.
