Cardinal Thomas Stafford Williams was born in Wellington, New Zealand, on March 20, 1930. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1959, in Rome. After his ordination, he studied in Ireland, and received a degree in Social Sciences. On his return to New Zealand, he served in various pastoral assignments. He was a missionary in Western Samoa until 1976. On December 20, 1979, he was ordained archbishop of Wellington. He was created a cardinal on February 2, 1983. Jesus the Divine Teacher (at Pineda Sacchetti) is his titular church. He is Archbishop emeritus of Wellington. He served from 1995-2005 as the Military Ordinary for New Zealand. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
