Cardinal Ricardo J. Vidal was born on February 6, 1931, in Mogpoc, Philippines. On March 17, 1956, he was ordained to the priesthood. He was ordained titular bishop of Claterna and coadjutor bishop of Melalos on November 30, 1971. From 1973 until 1981, he served as archbishop of Lipa. On April 13, 1981, he became coadjutor archbishop of Cebu, and was raised to that see on August 24, 1982. On May 25, 1985, he was created a cardinal, and was assigned the titular church of Sts. Peter and Paul (in Via Ostiensi). He served as Archbishop of Cebu until 15 October 2010. He was a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, the Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers, and the Council for the Family.
