Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns, O.F.M, was born on September 14, 1921, in Forquilhinha, Brazil. He was ordained a priest on November 30, 1945. He held various teaching posts. He served as director of Sponsa Christi, and did monthly reviews of religious publications, such as those for the Franciscan publication center in Brazil. On July 3, 1966, he was ordained titular bishop of Respetta and auxiliary bishop of São Paulo. From October 22, 1978 until 1998, he served as archbishop of São Paulo. He was elevated to Cardinal on March 5, 1973. His titular church is St. Anthony of Padua (in Via Tuscolana). He is retired as Archbishop of São Paulo on April 15, 1998.
