Cardinal Audrys Juozas Backis was born on February 1, 1937, in Kaunas, Lithuania. He was ordained to the priesthood on March 18, 1961. He entered the Holy See diplomatic service in 1964 and was posted to the Philippines, Costa Rica, Turkey, Nigeria, and the Council for the Public Affairs of the Church. From 1979 to 1988 he was undersecretary to the Council for the Public Affairs of the Church. He was appointed titular Archbishop of Meta and Nuncio to the Netherlands on August 5, 1988. On December 24, 1991, he was appointed Archbishop of Vilnius. At that time he became president of the Lithuanian Bishops' Conference. He was elevated to Cardinal on February 21, 2001, with The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Via Gallia as his titular church. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Vilnius. In the Roman Curia, he serves on the Congregation for Education, the Council for Social Communication, and the Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church.
