Cardinal Franc Rode was born on September 23, 1934, near Ljubljana, Slovenia. He was ordained a priest with the Congregation of the Missions on June 29, 1960. On April 6, 1997 he became Archbishop of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Februray 11, 2004 he was appointed Prefect of the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life for the Roman Curia. He was elevated to Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI on March 24, 2006 and appointed Cardinal-Deacon of S. Francesco Saverio alla Garbatella. He retired as Prefect of the Institutes of Consecrated Life on 4 January 2011.
