Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi was born, 18 October 1942, in Merate, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Milan on 28 June 1966. He taught biblical exegesis at the archdiocesan seminary in Milan and served as a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission from 1985 to 1995. He was made Prefect of Milanís Ambrosian Library in 1989, where he served until 3 September 2007, when he was appointed President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, and of the pontifical commissions for Sacred Archaeology and for the Cultural Heritage of the Church. At that time, he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Villamagna in Proconsulari and ordained Bishop on 29 September 2007. On 20 November 2007, he was elevated to Cardinal.
