Mother Angelica was born Rita Francis Rizzo on April 20, 1923 in Canton, Ohio. On August 15, 1944 she entered the religious life, becoming a Franciscan Nun of the Most Blessed Sacrament, a Poor Clare, in Cleveland, Ohio. After a serious back injury, she promised God she would start a monastery in the South if she could walk again after surgery. To honor her promise, she came South in 1961 to found Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Birmingham, Alabama, with money raised from the sale of fishing lures she and a few other Sisters made and marketed.
