Cardinal Raymond L. Burke was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin, on 30 June 1948. He studied for the priesthood at Wisconsinís Holy Cross Seminary, the Catholic University of America in Washington, and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained a priest on 29 June 1975. He returned to Gregorian University to study Canon Law, from 1980 to 1984, and taught there as a visiting professor from 1984 to 1994. During that time, he worked for the Apostolic Signatura (the Vaticanís highest court), and he also served on the Roman Rota (the Churchís central appeals court). On 10 December 1994, he was appointed Bishop of La Crosse, Wisconsin, and ordained Bishop on 6 January 1995. He was then appointed Archbishop of St Louis, Missouri, on 2 December 2003, where he served until being appointed Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura on 27 June 2008. He was elevated to Cardinal on 20 November 2010. On 8 November 2014, he resigned as Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura and was appointed Patron of the Order of Malta.
