Common Declaration of Pope John Paul
and Catholicos Karekin I

At the end of their meeting, on December 13, 1996, His Holiness Pope John Paul II and His Holiness Catholicos Karekin I Sarkissian signed a Common Declaration. "The communion already existing between the two Churches and the hope for and commitment to recovery of full communion between them should become factors of motivation for further contact and more regular and substantial dialogue, leading to a greater degree of mutual understanding", the Pope and the Catholicos said in their joint statement, which was written in English.

Common Declaration signed in the Vatican June 29, 1995 "We invite all to forgive one another and to express a firm will that a new relationship of brotherhood and active collaboration will be established." The pope and the patriarch issued this declaration at the end of the patriarch's three-day visit to the Vatican.
