JOANS ROME SURPRISES THE SISTERS OF CHARITY - VATICAN INSIDER IN JERUSALEM: SAMI EL-YOUSEF, PONTIFICAL MISSION FOR PALESTINE
Wednesday, June 04, 2014
As I noted yesterday, I leave tomorrow for Philadelphia to attend the wedding of two very special friends, so this page will be quiet for a few days. This time will basically be a mini-vacation but never underestimate my ability to find time to post news or photos or videos on Twitter, Facebook of Youtube!

JUST IN: If true, the following story contains some potentially very important news about Catholic-Orthodox talks: Asia News has trusted sources around the world, but principally in Asia and the Middle East: http://www.asianews.it/news-en/Pope-Francis-sends-message-to-Patriarch-of-Moscow,-Kirill:-I-am-ready-to-meet-31265.html

JOANS ROME SURPRISES THE SISTERS OF CHARITY

Monday, my last afternoon in Jordan, I accompanied my friend Huda to the Amman home of Blessed Mother Teresas Missionaries of Charity. Years ago Huda had organized a group of volunteers to help the Sisters in any way they needed, and Monday afternoon she wanted to briefly meet with a new group of volunteers, anxious to cheer them on in their work and also to answer any questions they might have. The Sisters are much beloved here, as they are everywhere, in their daily work of carrying out Mother Teresas mission to the poor, ill and dying, and underprivileged.

We entered the building, and immediately to our right was the door to a small room used for such meetings. Huda gently knocked on the partly-opened door and we entered and then something so comical happened, I could not make this up!

One of the Sisters was seated at a table with the seven new volunteers. Sister stood up with a wide smile on her face and cried out, Huda, welcome! How wonderful to see you!

At the exact same instant, the seven women stood up and, almost with one voice, said Oh my goodness, its Joan of EWTN! Welcome!

It was one of those unplanned moments that, if one had planned it, it would have been captured on video!

No video, but here is a photo of Huda seated next to Sister:

And here I am with the ladies who so ably and generously volunteer their time:

VATICAN INSIDER IN JERUSALEM: SAMI EL-YOUSEF, PONTIFICAL MISSION FOR PALESTINE

Sami El-Yousef, a Palestinian Catholic who lives in Jerusalem, heads the Pontifical Mission for Palestine (PMP), an office related to CNEWA (Catholic Near East Welfare Association, initials are pronounced kuh-nay-wa), spoke to me during my recent trip to the Holy Land. We had met in Rome during a CNEWA meeting and exchanged cards, the moment one usually says, If you are ever in Jerusalem.., if you are ever in Rome.

I had a wonderful visit at the PMP headquarters in the Old City of Jerusalem. Sami was born here and wait until he tells you about his grandfather, father, himself and his children all born in the same area but in each case, in a different geo-political setting, from the Ottoman empire (his grandfather) to modern day State of Israel (his children)!

Sami talks about his work, assesses Pope Francis visit to the Holy Land and tells you all you should know (must know, really!) about the difficulties of being a Christian in the Holy Land, and in Jerusalem. It was a riveting conversation and I am delighted to be able to share our talk with you on Vatican Insider. You will undoubtedly be surprised, perhaps even shocked, at some of the things he has to tell us.

Sami showed me both sides of the commemorative medal he had received just moments before my arrival in his office. The medal, sent by President Mahmoud Abbas of the State of Palestine, was given to each of the eight representatives of Catholic organizations who had been invited to Bethlehem to meet Pope Francis on May 25.
