VATICAN INSIDER: FR. RIFAT BADER OF CATHOLIC MEDIA CENTER IN AMMAN

Be sure to tune in to Vatican Insider this weekend when I present Part I of my conversation with Fr. Rifat Bader, general director of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media in Amman, Jordan. We spoke during my six-day visit to Jordan after the Holy Fathers three-day journey to the Holy Land. Fr. Bader was the spokesman for the church in Jordan during the May 24 visit of Pope Francis to his country, a day before the Pope proceeded to Bethlehem for a Mass and to Jerusalem for a meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I.

Fr. Bader and I first met in Jordan in 2009 during Pope emeritus Benedicts visit to the Holy Land. We met again in 2010 for Benedicts trip to Cyprus and again in 2012 for the Pope emeritus trip to Lebanon. Fr. Bader was in Rome for last years conclave that elected Pope Francis. In fact, Father talks of Francis visit to Amman and has some wonderful behind the scenes stories as well as analysis of the papal trip and of the situation for Christians in his land, in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. All that - this week and next!

PRE-WORLD CUP FINAL PAUSE FOR PEACE

The Pontifical Council for Culture has launched the "Pause for Peace" campaign ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2014 final in Brazil on Sunday evening. Adherents are asking for a moment of silence around the Sunday, July 13 match to remember those stricken by wars and unrest worldwide. Some wish for a moment of silence at the match. All wish for a cessation of bloodshed in those many areas of the world undergoing dramatic conflict in these days.

The President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi took to social media to promote the initiative heading into the weekend. @cardinalravasi tweeted, A still, small voice of silence (1 Kings 19,12) #PAUSEforPeace #WorldCup2014

Council undersecretary, Msgr. Melchor Sanchez, explained that the initiative is part of a tradition that goes back millennia. Sports were born around religious festivities, he said. Sporting events were moments of peace, when wars ceased, as for the Olympic truce, he continued, asking, Why not for the World Cup, why not a pause, a moment of silence, a truce for peace?

The initiative is being promoted on social media with the hashtag #PAUSEforPeace (Vatican Radio)

THE POPE APP 2 DEBUTS

Pope Francis has expressed his appreciation for the work being done by all the Vaticans media services in enhancing their presence and participation in the digital world. The Popes words came on Monday as he was given a personal viewing of the new updated version of The Pope App, developed by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications (PCCS).

Council President Archbishop Claudio Celli, accompanied by project coordinator, Thaddeus Jones, met with the Pope to demonstrate features of the app, which was released in the iTunes and Google Play stores on July 4th. Available in five languages, the Pope App 2.0 is free and can be downloaded on Apple and Android devices. Powered by News.va, it features the latest papal news and information as produced by the Vaticans own media services including Vatican Radio. (Vatican Radio/PCCS)
