John's
Question from Lawrence on 4/16/2005:
Canada

How come we have John XXIII when there were only 21 Pope John's?

Answered on 4/19/2005:

There was an antipope who "reigned" 997-998, and who took the name John XVI. No Pope ever took that name again. Another antipope who "reigned" 1410-1415, took the name John XXIII. Apparently Angelo Roncalli, who reigned 1958-1963, didn't see that as a reason not to take the name himself.
