Pope's age.
Question from Mary on 4/19/2005:
United States

We thank God for our newly elected Pope but why not a younger one?

Answered on 5/2/2005:

Because he was the man the Church needed, irrespective of his age. No one else had his qualifications, devout, brilliant, close confidant of John Paul II, experienced in how the Vatican works, and well versed in world affairs. Remember, John XXIII was about the same age when he was elected, and he laid the foundations for reform in Vatican II.
