St Theresa of Avila and hell
Question from tjay on 10/16/2015:

Dear Dr Geraghty, I know you have probably answered before but was shocked to read that answer. It surely cannot be true that lapsed Catholics but good people/very good people/ supporting voluntarily disabled for years and years/helping homeless etc. but stopped going to Mass/That at death they go to hell. It cannot be. If God is love and these people have lost their way/for whatever reason surely God in his love and mercy will not condemn them/ purgatory possibly but not outright hell. Thanks God Bless you all

Answer by Richard Geraghty on 12/10/2015:

Dear Tjay,

All we know is what the Church teaches. She teaches that anyone who dies in mortal sin goes to hell She also teaches that if people are purposely responsible for not going to Sunday Mass, they are in mortal sin. Now who is to be the judge of who is personally responsible? It is God. Only God is capable of judging exactly a person's responsibility. So let God do his job. It is our job to go to Mass on Sunday and do what the Church requires. We should not excuse our selves from this duty because apparently other good people do not do it.

Dr. Geraghty
