Hi Colin - What exactly are the upcoming changes to the liturgy and where can I find more information about this? Thanks! |

Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 7/5/2011: | ||||||||
There are no changes to the ritual actions. A few minor adjustments were already implemented in 2002 when the 3rd edition of the Roman Missal was promulgated. Also, the Lectionary texts are not changes. New Lectionary texts were also implemented about a decade ago now. The changes this year are the implementation of a new translation of the actual texts of the Mass, the first since the 1970s. The US Bishops just authorized the use of new musical settings for the Ordinary beginning in September (e.g. Gloria, the Holy, Holy, Holy and the memorial acclamations), but the bulk of the texts (prayers said by priest and people) will be implemented on the First Sunday of Advent, with the anticipated Mass of Saturday 26 November 2011. Interestingly, among the settings authorized for implementation in September are the new translations for the 3 memorial acclamations after the consecration. They are: 1. We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again. 2. When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again. 3. Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free. Missing after November 27th, 2011, will be the familiar "Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again." This fourth acclamation was never part of the Latin text, but a variation of the first acclamation approved in 1970 for inclusion in English-language missals. For more information on the changes go the USCCB Roman Missal minisite
.
For those with iOS devices such as the iPhone, there is a nice app "New Mass" available in the App Store that gives both the current and new texts, as well as an explanation of the changes. Finally, we did an EWTN Theology Roundtable on the subject, which can be obtained at EWTN Theology Roundtable: Roman Missal, New Translation |
