EWTN Catholic Q&A
Election of a new Pope
Question from Edna Linden-Nwabufo on 04-13-2005:

Are there any top contenders for the Papacy coming from Africa and Latin American Countries? If so, would you give me their names as I am very unfamiliar with the college of cardinals.

Answer by Matthew Bunson on 04-14-2005:

It is perhaps better to say that there are several Cardinals from those regions who are mentioned as potentially worthy successors to Pope John Paul II. Among those mentioned frequently are: Francis Arinze of Nigeria; Claudio Hummes of Brazil; Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina; and Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico. There are, of course, many other cardinals who are respected and considered genuine possibilities.
