EWTN Catholic Q&A
organ transplant
Question from diane on 03-06-2018:

If my brother is dying and needs a heart transplant, and I am perfectly healthy and want to donate my heart, even if I know I will immediately die, when they remove it. Is this ethical? Isn't a doner only allowed to donate, after they have died, if it's one main organ like this? Isn't this like commiting suicide, so that another may live? Thanks

If you donate your heart, you will be agreeing to kill yourself. This is a sin against God.

The only ethical way to donate an organ is to make sure the patient who is donating is already dead.
