Hello, My daughter has a medical problem. I have read some of your past posts where you forwarded the question to a doctor to get his expertise - I wonder if you would extend me the same courtesy? One of her breasts is developing much larger than the other. It has been suggested that she go on birth control for awhile to help cure the problem. Can you advise regarding the best moral and medical solution? She is 16 years old. Thank You. |

Dear CRS: I shared your question with Anthony Dardano, MD, and here is his response: I personally can not see any reason to recommend such a therapy. While breast development
is under central hormonal control, taking the birth control pill would, if anything, make both
breasts enlarge, not just the underdeveloped one. Furthermore, the adverse medical side
effects of the pill certainly outweigh any potential benefit. Another negative, not usually
thought of, is giving a teenager the pill even though the intent would be for a medical
reason, the temptation to experiment sexually, now that the fear of pregnancy is gone, can
lead to her promiscuity.
Discrepancy in breast development is seen from time to time. I personally would wait before
any thought of addressing the issue is entertained. Many "catch up" on their own-especially
after pregnancy. If deemed necessary, an ultrasound of the breast can be performed to
evaluate the glandular component of the underdeveloped breast as this offers no radiation
exposure and is harmless. If the difference is remarkable enough to cause significant
emotional stress, then the possibility of a benign simple saline implant might be considered, In all my years I have only seen this condition once that required cosmetic correction, the
rest have all self corrected. Be patient and the chances are quite good that nothing need be
done. I would give the same advice to my daughter. May God bless her. Anthony N Dardano, MD, FACOG, FACS |
