Excommunication of politicians
Question from kris miggins on 11/10/2012:

Hi, Dr Geraghty, not sure if you remember me but you were my Philosophy Professor at Providence College 1988.I learned so much from your class that applies to everyday life. Hope you are well. I do have a question and not sure if this can be answered here. When will the Catholic Church based on doctrine and moral theology excommunicate any politician that claims they are Catholic but publically endorse abortion? Thanks so much, pleased to see you here!!

Answer by Richard Geraghty on 11/25/2012:

Dear Chris,

It's good to hear from an old student. In hanging around with EWTN you're hanging in there with the faith. Great. Anyway, the Bishops have the power to excommunicate politicians whose public stance opposes the faith. I am not sure if any Bishop has done that yet. But they have expressed their general disapproval.

Dr. Geraghty
