Divorce to qualify for Medicaid
Question from Bob on 7/12/2013:

My wife likely will need to be in a nursing home because of dementia . Unless we divorce , both of us will have to be impoverished before she would qualify for help from MEDICAID . Would it be morally acceptable for us to divorce to prevent the stay at home spouse from facing impoverishment ? We would still considered ourselves married by the church and bound by such .

Answer by Richard Geraghty on 10/16/2013:

Dear Bob,

That may be a way out. Check it with your pastor. You are in a real difficulty.

Dr. Geraghty
