Best commentary

Fr. John, which would be the best bible commentary to purchase for bible study. Something with history and explanation of Scripture. Thank you God bless you.

Here is what I can recommend, one of which is free and online:

Haydock commentary on the Douay Rheims (extensive quotes from Church Fathers and rock solid): available in hard copy or free online at:

I also recommend the Ignatius Study Bible series, with notes by Scott Hahn and others. I can also recommend the Navarre series, though the commentary is less extensive and more spiritual.
