5th Meeting of Pope Francis' Council of Cardinals Gets Underway

Discussions Continue on Reform of Roman Curia

VATICAN CITY, July 01, 2014 (Zenit.org) - A fifth meeting of Pope Francis' council of eight cardinals opened this morning at the Vatican and will continue through Friday.

The Holy Father met with the cardinals this morning who aim to improve the governance of the Church and revise "Pastor Bonus."

"Pastor Bonus," the apostolic constitution promulgated by Pope John Paul II on June 28, 1988, instituted several reforms regarding how the Roman Curia is run. The document sets out the roles of the secretariat of state, congregations, tribunals, pontifical councils, administrative services and pontifical commissions, as well as other norms, such as the ad limina visits.

The fourth meeting of the council took place late this April, and its previous ones were held in October, December and February. (D.C.L.)
