JAMES FRANCIS CARDINAL STAFFORD
One of the
participants in the Closing Mass with the Holy Father on Sunday 20
August is Cardinal Stafford, the President of the Pontifical Council
for the Laity.
Before assuming his
present office on 20 August 1996, Cardinal Stafford was the
Archbishop of Denver, Colorado, and host of the enormously
successful 8th World Youth Day (9-16 Aug 1993).
Born in Baltimore, Maryland
on 26 July 1932, Cardinal Stafford was ordained a priest for the
archdiocese of Baltimore on 15 December 1957. On 29 February
1976 Pope Paul VI made him an auxiliary bishop of Baltimore, an
office he held until appointed Archbishop of Denver on 3 June 1986.
Each Cardinal receives from the Holy
Father the care of a particular Roman church. Called a titular
church the assigned Cardinal has no authority of governance over it,
only the responsibility to give it his patronage. The titular church
of Cardinal Stafford is Jesus the Good Shepherd, located at Montagno.
