Angels - Sources of Information
In an era when a great deal is said about the angels, much of it new age or otherwise heterodox, it is important to read material whose authors are trustworthy. The fullest presentation is that of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor, who in his Summa Theologica Part I, On the Nature of God, also contains a Treatise on the Angels (Questions 50 to 64). There he presents and discusses the ancient doctrine of the Church as it came down to his day (the 13th century).
Other books which would make for a good library on the angels:
1. My Way - A small handbook summarizing the teaching of the Angelic Doctor, St. Thomas Aquinas, on every subject, including angels.
2. The Angels - Fr. Pascal Parente
3. My Angel will go before you - George Huber
4. The Angels and their Mission - Cardinal Danielou, SJ
5. All about Angels - Paul Sullivan, OP
6. St. Michael and the Angels - various sources
7. Heavenly Army of Angels - Bob and Penny Lord
8. Angels (and Demons) - Peter Kreeft
9. The Angels are Waiting - Fr. Randall Paine, ORC
You can, of course, read the Sacred Scripture where they are mentioned hundreds of times, from Gen. 3:24 (when Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden and a Cherubim placed there to prevent their re-entry), all along the history of both covenants to Revelation 22 (where they guard the 12 gates into the Heavenly Jerusalem). This illustrates a truth of the Divine Plan which Hebrews states so well, “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?” (Heb. 1:9).
