Angelus (1 June 1980)

Author: Pope John Paul II

On 1 June 1980, the Holy Father prayed the Angelus in Paris, when he spoke of contemplating Mary, blessed among women.

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today, in every family in France, the mother will be honored and celebrated. Children will give her the best gift their hearts choose. It is beautiful that everyone turns especially to his mother, when he is lucky enough to still have her, because it is she who introduces man to life, it is she who teaches him to love in life. surrounding the first with affection.

Likewise, we Christians must often turn to Mary, because through her, thanks to the Holy Spirit, we have received Christ who has made known to us the tenderness of the Father in heaven.

How could we live our baptism, without contemplating Mary, blessed among all women, so welcoming to the gift of God? Christ gave her to us as Mother. He gave her as Mother to the Church. She shows us the way. Even more, she intercedes for us. Spontaneously, every Catholic entrusts his prayer to her, and even consecrates himself to her the better to consecrate himself to God.

You are well aware of this beautiful custom of the Church of marking morning, noon and evening with a pause in prayer, the Angelus, to repeat to Mary the first greeting of the Angel Gabriel and her own response, to enter us themselves in the mystery of God made man. Often the bells of your churches continue to invite you to this prayer, which we are going to say together. May Mary watch over each of your families, over each of your cities! May she watch over France!
