Angelus (19 June 1983)
On Sunday, 19 June 1983, the Holy Father recited the Angelus in the Sanctuary of Jasna Góra, following Holy Mass, uniting himself in prayer with his compatriots throughout Poland.
1. Before closing the Holy Mass, I would like to recite the "Angelus", as I do at noon every Sunday in Rome.
The "Angelus" brings within itself all the eloquence of the Mystery , which, among other things, was expressed in the Polish Sanctuary of Jasna Góra: Mary accepted the Archangel's announcement as the humble Servant of the Lord, and by the work of the Holy Spirit became Mother of the Eternal Word. "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us" ( John , 1, 14) to accomplish the Redemption of the world.
The "Angelus" prayer reminds us of the beginning of the mystery of Redemption, which we seek in a special way to understand in this extraordinary Jubilee year.
2. I wish to join in praying the "Angelus" of Jasna Góra with all those who today recite this prayer together with me in Rome or anywhere in the world.
I wish to unite myself in a particular way with those who live throughout Poland: with my Compatriots. I pray with them and for them. For all.
3. In this prayer I wish in a special way to join those who in my homeland carry out various intellectual works.
I think of teachers and educators in different schools, from nursery schools to universities.
I think of employees who work in offices, industry and commerce.
I think of doctors and everyone who provides health services.
I think of workers according to the different specialized functions they perform.
I think of engineers in different sectors.
I think about the creators of the Nation's culture and art .
I think about those who spread it.
I think about writers.
I think about men of science.
I think of all those professions, which are also vocations, that serve the common good of society, forming the different sectors of national culture.
4. We will also recommend to God — on other occasions — farmers, industrial workers and other social groups.
Today, here in Jasna Góra, we include in the context of our "Angelus" prayer all those who carry out any intellectual work in the Homeland. The "Angelus" prayer allows us to meditate on the revelation of the eternal Design of God's Love towards man. May the work of human intelligence, in various directions, serve in Polish land for the consolidation of truth and for the expansion of areas of good in our homeland community.
Supplicate this for us with the Father of all light, the One who became the Mother of the Incarnate Word, and who has been present among us for six centuries in his Effigy of Jasna Góra.
— The one that is "given for the defense of the Polish nation".
