To Participants in an Ecumenical Meeting (28 January 1979)
On Sunday, 28 January 1979, spoke to participants in an Ecumenical Meeting, calling for prayer for "faithfulness in unity."
Beloved Brothers in Christ,
Allow me to express to you, above all, my sincere thanks for your kindness and for the expressions of esteem and respect that you have addressed to me.
I wish to assure you that I, too, feel very pleased to be with you and share this spiritual experience, feeling that Christ, our master, the Lord, the Redeemer, Christ our hope, is in our midst. He continues to exhort us with his pressing appeal: let them be one, Father, as you and I are one.
On my side, I said already at the beginning of my pontificate that ecumenical concern will be one of my aims.
Let us pray, brothers, to the Lord Jesus that he may give us faithfulness to him, faithfulness in the unity that he wished for us, in order that the world may believe.
In order that it may be so, I call on you to recite the Our Father all together
