Visit to the Leon Cathedral in Nicaragua (4 March 1983)

Author: Pope John Paul II

On Friday, 4 March 1983, the Holy Father visited the ancient Cathedral of León, the oldest diocese in Nicaragua.

Dear brothers and sisters

In my brief visit to this ancient Cathedral of León, where I had my first meeting in a sacred space with the Catholics of Nicaragua, I greet with great esteem the Pastor of this diocese, D. Julián Barni, the beloved priests, men and women religious and seminarians of this diocese and from other parts of the country. I will meet with many others this afternoon in Managua. But I assure you now that I understand your difficulties, that I accompany you with fraternal affection and encourage you in your generous ecclesiastical sacrifice that unites you to the redemptive merit of the cross of Christ.

I also greet all the faithful people of Leão, those who have suffered and are suffering for so many reasons and injustices and in particular, you, gathered in this temple, the spiritual center of the diocese. Live closely united to your Bishop, pray for the Church, be faithful to your faith and show solidarity with those who suffer. Let us now raise our prayers to our common Father, together with our brothers who are waiting for us in the University area. And receive my cordial Blessing, especially the sick and elderly whom I embrace in the love of Christ.
