EWTN Signs Agreement With SIRIUS Satellite Radio
Irondale, AL (EWTN) – EWTN Global Catholic Network has signed agreements with SIRIUS Satellite Radio for the carriage of EWTN’s 24-hour English and Spanish radio programming services beginning in January 2004.
Michael Warsaw, the Network’s President, said an agreement has been reached to make EWTN available to SIRIUS subscribers in homes, businesses, automobiles, trucks, boats and RVs anywhere in the United States.
“Long ago, our Foundress, Mother Angelica, recognized the importance of radio as a medium for carrying out EWTN’s mission of Evangelization. EWTN has been pleased to be part of the growth of community-based Catholic radio in the U.S. during the past decade.” Warsaw continued, “We are delighted to be the first Catholic programmer to be included in a U.S. satellite radio service. This new digital technology will enable people across the country, particularly those who are not served by terrestrial Catholic radio stations, to have access to EWTN’s radio programming.”
“We are grateful to SIRIUS for recognizing the need for Catholic programming to be included in their line-up. We thank God for this development,” he said.
EWTN began its English and Spanish short wave radio services in 1992. Four years later, using the satellite reach of its television network, EWTN’s radio service was made available to AM & FM radio stations around the world. SIRIUS plans to launch both EWTN’s English language service and its Spanish language service early next month.
EWTN Global Catholic Radio offers listeners live call-in talk shows, informative teaching series, daily devotions, Church events and musical presentations in English and Spanish.
SIRIUS is the only satellite radio service to offer 60 streams of commercial-free music and more than 40 selections of sports, news, and entertainment. It recently announced an agreement to carry all regular-season and selected pre-and-post-season NFL games nationwide beginning in September 2004. SIRIUS radios for the home or vehicle are available at thousands of consumer electronics retailers throughout the country and via mail order outlets.
